About Russian Dolls & Toys
We are a small shop, run by C2A Enterprise from Kyiv, Ukraine, selling nesting dolls made the traditional way: turned on a lathe from seasoned linden wood, then painted by hand. We buy from the workshops directly, which is the only reliable way to know who made what you are buying, and we post every order from Ukraine to all 27 European Union countries and beyond.
Where the matryoshka started, Moscow 1890
The first Russian nesting doll was made in 1890 at the Abramtsevo estate workshops outside Moscow, on the initiative of the arts patron Savva Mamontov. Looking at Japanese carved figures brought back from Honshu, the turner Vasily Zvyozdochkin made a hollow eight-piece figure, and the painter Sergey Malyutin gave it the peasant girl with a black rooster that people still picture today.
In 1900 Mamontov showed it at the Paris Exposition Universelle, where it won a bronze medal. That is when the rest of the world noticed. There is more in our guide to Russian nesting dolls.
Why the wood is always linden
Real matryoshka dolls are turned from Tilia cordata, the small-leaved lime. It is cut in early spring, when the sap makes the bark come away cleanly, and then left to dry outdoors under a covered shed for two to three years.
Linden has an even grain, almost no knots, and it is light and slightly springy. That combination lets a turner cut a seam tight enough to hold shut but loose enough to still open after the wood has moved through a few winters. We wrote up the whole process in how the dolls are made.

We work with painters in the towns that each have their own recognisable hand:
Semenovo (Semenovskaya)
The centre of Russian woodturning. Yellow headscarves, red aprons and big scarlet rose bouquets, with the face left on bare linden.
Sergiev Posad (Zagorsk)
Where the first doll was made. Village fairs, pilgrims and everyday scenes, painted in matte gouache and outlined in fine black ink.
Polkhov-Maidan
Crimson rosehip flowers in strong aniline dyes, finished under several coats of clear lacquer.
Pyrography & Gold Leaf
Fine patterns burned into bare linden with a heated pen, then picked out with gold leaf and deep gouache colours.

Nothing here is a plastic copy or a printed transfer. Every doll was turned and painted by a person we buy from directly, so more of what you pay reaches the people who did the work. Orders start at 250 euros, shipping from Ukraine is included and insured, EU parcels clear customs inside the Union so there is nothing to pay on arrival, and you have 30 days to send anything back.
